"Play a Part" was written when I was 19.

I was waiting for a friend to pick me up and was just dinking around on my guitar when I stumbled onto the strum pattern. I started jamming on the two-chord structure and lyrics started dropping into my mind, so I wrote them down. By the time she arrived, I had the whole short song written.

When I got back home that night, I one-taked the recording on my MiniDV camcorder. I recently found the old tape while digging through my archives. The clip was originally uploaded on July 8, 2007 at 1:10 AM.

In this new mix, you can hear my original guitar driving the song, along with my foot stomp. My original lead vocal has been moved into more of a backing role. Back then, I had also layered in some weird vocal sound effects, including the howls during the laughter and some strange mouth-noise percussion.

Using Suno, I added a stronger lead singer to follow the shape of my original vocal, plus bass, strings, and a tiny bit of piano.

The first few seconds of the song, and the ending, are just the original demo with no Suno at all.

This song is interesting in my catalog because it was truly one-and-done. I wrote it once, recorded it once, and have never played it a second time. Friends who heard the original seemed to really like it despite the darker themes, and I was always proud when they asked me for a copy.

In hindsight, I think the song was a message from that dark corner of the conscious bent on self destruction .

Penny for ye thoughts?
