Looking again for answers to a decades old movie search

Unsolved

Hello. I'm new to this community. I was directed here by a friend who thinks you could be my last hope for finding this movie again. I'd like to actually watch it again, and share it with several specific people in my life right now, but would be ecstatic just to pinpoint the title at this point so I can prove to myself it exists.

So here goes (fingers and toes all crossed.)

Checked out from the Beaverton branch of the Washington County Oregon public library on VHS or maybe DVD (I seem to remember VHS tape) somewhere between 2000-2007. I definitely watched it BEFORE 2008 (because I was living in the US in a specific house at the time I watched it.) The searchable records from that era are no more and the library staff has been unable to assist (they did try.) I do remember I was going through ALL the Bollywood and Bollywood adjacent movies the library had at the time (this was long before streaming was a thing and I would have been too poor to afford it anyway.)

Plotline is a low level struggling American actor in his approx late 20 to mid 30s age, living in Los Angeles at the time he is given a terminal cancer diagnosis. Then he gets invited to a job to go to India to be what he thinks will be a lead actor in a Bollywood type movie. He is a fish out of water and sort of a token white man on the set. He's shocked at the way Indian films are made and experiences a lot of culture shock. There is a scene near the beginning of a party in a mid century modern/ranch style house in an LA suburb where the main character is drinking a beer from a bottle and talking about how badly his career is going. It's possible his girl friend dumps him early on too. There may be scenes of the Indian cast/crew trying to teach him how to dance in their style. Another scene (and the reason I'm searching for the movie again) where he is sitting in a car at night on location in India, with middle aged fatherly short and stout build Indian man (who is part of the movie production, has befriended him and is a main supporting character who is comedic but also becomes accidentally wise at times.) The main character says it isn't death (from the cancer) he fears most, it's pain. I also seem to remember some scenes with a woman who is an actress in the film's film in a red sari and them being in a sort of closet together by accident. She finds him annoying but also gets to like him a little & he sees her the same. As he acclimates to his surroundings, he learns about meaning in life, what's important and love and connection. He then returns to LA to begin treatment and discovers the diagnosis was a mistake.

English language with some occasional/incidental Hindi subtitles and English only lettering on the cover. Any Indian actors did have accents but could have been acting them. I did think I recognized some of the actors from other actual Bollywood movies (I'm a big fan of those too, but was just getting to know them well at the time.)

Live action. Contemporary setting.

Main actor was white and looked/sounded like Greg Kinnear or Joel Mchale or possibly David Sutcliffe but they don't have this movie on their cv's. Hair was dark blond or very light brown and light, possibly blue eyes.

Actor could have been Canadian himself and only played an American.

This is NOT a Bollywood made/produced film it just has a Bollywood style movie as part of the plot.

The diagnosis is definitely cancer and a mix up mistake possibly of test results. A doctor tells him it was a mistake at the end because they tell him when he returns to LA that they've been trying to reach him and this is a major plot point. They never say what type of cancer though. There is a scene of the main character reacting in a stunned fashion as he tries to absorb the error and what it means for him.

The genre is more a heartfelt drama with some comedy/light-hearted moments and not a focused romance. It's more focused on the main character's journey/growth. It's a bittersweet kind of "vibe."

Felt like it was produced in the late 1990s or early 2000s as an independent American or more likely Canadian production. It had some polished production values but not Hollywood style and definitely more Canadian leaning. Since it's proving so hard to find again, I'm thinking it was probably a festival piece or something that went straight to VHS/DVD market. (Which would really be too bad, because it was a sweet and satisfying watch.)

What it DEFINITELY IS NOT: Bollywood Calling or pretty much anything else that has popped up on "regular" or AI searches. I've watched all of the suggestions just to make sure and no joy.

So is there anyone out there who might somehow, someway have seen this movie at some point and remember it well enough to share the title? Or who has a magical way of hunting it down? Because so far, every avenue and alleyway and dark corner I've poked into has been empty.

Thank you to anyone who gives it a go. I appreciate you!
