Why aren't demos more common

Discussion / Question

It seems like the death of video game rentals is a huge downside of the decline in physical media that doesn't get talked about as much. And I don't understand why demos haven't taken the place of rentals.

If you're a PC gamer who mostly uses Steam where there are always sales, then very cool and I imagine the cost of games might not be something that is a huge factor in your experience. But for console players, the deal is either pay full/posted price or buy the gaming subscription service that might not have many of the games you want to play.

Just from my own experience in the past few months, as someone who has an Xbox and a Switch 2. I would love to give Metroid 4 a shot. Word of mouth makes me hesitant to pay full price for it but if it were available to rent/demo I would try it out, and then who knows maybe I would decide that I love it. Same more recently with Lego Batman. I haven't really connected with a lot of past Lego games but this one looks like it might be different, but obviously I'm not going to gamble the full price of a game just hoping that it clicks for me. So instead I'm just not going to play those games. If you're a console player I'm sure you have similar examples in mind.

It just seems like these companies are leaving money on the table. Wouldn't they make more money if demos / digital rentals were a standard practice?
