Snapped my SD card in half - any chance of getting my photos back?
It really cracked... I was shooting a friend's wedding, and when I was removing the card, I don't know where it went, and it just snapped a 128G SD card in half . The crack is almost right in the middle.
It contains over 400 photos of the ceremony that were just taken, which I haven't had time to back up yet.
I've tried piecing the fragments together into a card reader, but the computer doesn't respond at all (the drive letter isn't displayed, and it can't be found in Device Manager). It doesn't even register when plugged into the computer, so I guess software like Recuva won't work.
A quick online search revealed that if the internal memory chip (die) is broken, there's no way to recover it; however, if the chip isn't broken but the casing is cracked, hiring a data recovery company might offer a glimmer of hope. But several companies quoted between $300 and $500, and none offered a guarantee.
The crack is right in the middle; it looks like things are going badly. Has anyone successfully recovered a card with this kind of physical breakage? This painful lesson has made me realize the importance of dual card slots ... Do you guys think it's still worth sending it in to try our luck? Or should we just give up and apologize to our friend?
