I started finger coiling my hair about two months ago, and I've recently reached the point where it's becoming very defined and holds its texture even after showering. Lately, though, I've been interested in getting locs and was wondering how I should adjust my routine to help achieve that. My hair type is around 3C/4A.

My current routine is:

  1. Finger coiling daily I usually do it whenever I'm bored. Having ADHD helps in this case since I'm always fidgeting with something.
  2. Showering every day Wetting my hair daily helps reduce frizz and keeps it looking neat.
  3. Using flaxseed gel occasionally I mainly use it to help with frizz control and definition.

My goal is to eventually have locs similar to Carti's. I'm wondering whether I should start separating my hair into smaller sections—in total, I currently have around 50–60 coils on the top alone, I'm still trying to grow the back more because i used to get pretty high fades but from now i think i'll just do a low taper. I'm also unsure whether I should continue with a freeform/semi-freeform approach or visit a loctician and get traditional starter locs. I'd appreciate any advice on which route would be best for achieving that style.
