Our starting rotation
I think we need to be realistic about our starting rotation. It held it together pretty well all season but is starting to look sub-par. After our top 3, there's a tremendous drop-off.
- D-Mart: Obviously, no complaints. He's having one of the best first halves of any Sox starter I've ever seen.
- Kay: He had his struggles for a while but he's really turned it around and has had an excellent overall season. 12 starts and only one loss.
- Burke: League only hitting .228 off him
- Fourth starter is a big hole for us. Let's be honest. We don't have a #4 starter. Sandlin is a disaster. Problem is, there's no-one to promote in the minors. Schultz will probably be back in a few weeks but he was really struggling. Our best starter in the minors is maybe Grant Umberger. 24 years old. He's been solid but he's only at High A (Winston Salem). Haden Smith is still struggling. Drew Thorpe is coming off Tommy John and hasn't pitched in 2 years. Where are all of our pitching prospects after 3 disastrous years ?!?!
- Fedde: He's struggling but I think he earned himself another start with his performance today. League only hitting .259 off. him.
It will be difficult to overtake Cleveland with a starting rotation that's about a 5 on a 10 scale with no-one to step up. They should consider trading Braden Montgomery. They can get a pretty good pitcher in return for him. Maybe with a better starting rotation we'll be able to start winning road games.
