We’ve all laughed about it, but ok, *why* are the drivers here so bad?

I’ve never had so many brushes with death as I have here. Drivers really do seem to SPEED UP when they come to intersections. I’ve had friends visit me from other neighborhoods and remark on how bad it is here. What’s going on? The Forest and Palmetto intersection is downright terrifying.
