She said she felt disconnected from me for months. We have a conversation scheduled, what should I do?
My girlfriend of about a year broke up with me recently. She told me she had been unhappy and emotionally detached for a while, and one of the biggest reasons was communication. She felt like we never had genuine conversations, that I gave a lot of short answers, didn't open up enough, and didn't let her into deeper parts of my life. Looking back, I can see where she's coming from, and I regret not realizing how serious it had become. She also said she felt like we were in different stages of life and that it wasn't fair for her to feel like she had to change me. After the breakup she asked for space, which I respected, and recently I asked if she'd be willing to have a conversation. She agreed, and we scheduled a time to talk.
Part of me wants to tell her that losing her made me realize how much I took for granted and how much I truly loved her. Looking back, I can see moments where she was trying to connect with me and I didn't fully show up the way she needed. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to work through things and see if there's a path forward, but I also don't want to pressure her or make the conversation about convincing her to come back. For people who have been through something similar, what would you focus on during that conversation, what should I avoid saying, and is it okay to tell her that I didn't fully realize what I had until I lost it?
