***DISCLAIMER: I DID THIS USING STEAM, WINDOWS 11 & AN XBOX ONE CONTROLLER; I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WILL WORK WITH OTHER SETUPS***

with the recent [WASD mod](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3737240806) by [u/Smokefoolius](https://www.reddit.com/user/Smokefoolius/) & using a custom controller layout, kenshi can now be played more intuitively with a controller!

watch the full showcase here [insert link]

- ***what this will do:*** let you switch between controlling your character with the stick, or "point & click", all with a controller
- ***what this won't do:*** make the game 100% compatible with a controller, unless you can deal with slightly clunky navigation - this game was not made for controller & this the best i could do, but feel free to improve upon it :)

1. at the very least, you will need to use the "V" key or set a controller input to be "V"
2. you could probably make it even more controller-dependent with one of them controllers with extra inputs/buttons.

*still interested?* great! i've made a lil tutorial below for how i set it up!

**REQUIREMENTS:**

- [RE_Kenshi (AKA rekenshi)](https://www.nexusmods.com/kenshi/mods/847)
- kenshi via steam
- xbox one controller *(you can probably use other controllers but this is what i'm using)*
- [Custom Controller Input](steam://controllerconfig/233860/3738178960)
- [Direct Control (Re_Kenshi)](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3737240806)

**STEP 1 - REKENSHI (SKIP IF ALREADY INSTALLED):**
- click link [RE_Kenshi (AKA rekenshi)](https://www.nexusmods.com/kenshi/mods/847)
- download & extract anywhere
- run the installer and follow it's instructions
- once installed, running the game normally should load RE_Kenshi
- if the mod has installed correctly, the version text in Kenshi's main menu should read:

*RE_Kenshi vx.x.x - Kenshi 1.0.x - x64 (Newland)*
- any issues, refer to the mod page

**STEP 2 - XBOX CONTROLLER SETUP (USING STEAM):**
- make sure you controller is connected to your PC & is turned on

*method 1:*
- click link and apply [WASD (Left Stick) Input](steam://controllerconfig/233860/3738178960)

*method 2 - skip if method 1 worked:*
- go to kenshi in your steam library & click on it
- to the right it should say "Controller" & something about it not being supported
- click "view controller settings"
- click "Browse Community Layouts..."
- navigate to search and input: "WASD (Left Stick) Input", which'll be by keepoursanity (me)
- click it and "Apply Layout"
- i'd recommend keeping this open so you can familiarise yourself with the layout, watch the showcase for visual display of basic controls

*NOTE: i used kenshi's default keybinds, so if you have changed them, you'll have to either tweak this layout or the game's*

**STEP 3 - DIRECT CONTROL (SKIP IF ALREADY INSTALLED):**
- go to steam workshop
- search "direct control" by smoke foo or click link [Direct Control (Re_Kenshi)](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3737240806)
- subscribe
- make sure you active it on the kenshi launcher under the "Mods" tab, by clicking the check box to the left of "WASDCombatPlugin"

*NOTE: if you have other mods installed, it will be at the bottom of the list. if it doesn't work, you might have to mess with the load order. i had it at the bottom of my list with other mods installed and had no issue*

**STEP 4 - PLAY:**
- launch game & navigate using either mouse or the right stick of controller
- make sure everything is running by:
1. check bottom right corner for RE_kenshi
2. check mods in the option for Direct Control)
- load/create your character
- left click (LT) the character you want to control
- press "V" on your keyboard to active Direct Control
- run around and have fun!
