In that love montage wish Nikki still had some of her I guess autonomy I don’t know what the right word would be

So basically in that montage bear and Nikki are happy but she was normal during that time and other the movie she got more obsessed, so my question is did she still have some of her free will during that montage when he made the wish? Or was it because Sarah was giving him attention she decided to dial up the obsession. That has really been bugging me.
