How do I tell someone that I need to move out? (There’s no TLDR, it’s super complicated)
Hi! I’m chatting with my friends about this too and I wish I had a therapist, but I need to ask for advice.
I just got out of a commune (it was a cult on a run down property, it was bad). Someone that I had worked with a few times scooped me out with the help of my friends.
Initially, when I moved in, it felt refreshing. I thought it was going to be normal and boring. It honestly felt like it at first because it wasn’t the commune.
But, now that I’m getting older, I’m able to recognize the red flags a little faster:
•Repeatedly / excessively telling (not asking) me what to do
•Putting me down (excessive “teasing”)
•Power dynamic (they’re 49 and are CONSTANTLY sure that I’m aware of that)
•No acknowledgment of what I do. I don’t help for the sake of thank-yous—I LOVE helping and cleaning—but it starts to get to me when it only becomes about what they’re telling me to do. I literally got a concussion and didn’t take out the trash the next day and of course they told me about it
•Their trauma takes priority and they said that their therapist said, “It’s a good thing that K is there to take care of you…” I DO NOT KNOW THEM V WELL AND I CAN’T BE IN ANOTHER CODEPENDENT RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE WHO IS OVER TWICE MY AGE I LITERALLY CAN’T “TAKE CARE OF THEM”
•I could keep going, but 🤪🤪🤪I’m also making these as concise as I can—they are not a villain, I just cannot handle living here if I want to stay alive and build a good life
And when I moved in, they told me that I could stay for a “minimum of three months.” Not maximum. Minimum.
I thought that I misheard them, but they repeated, “Notice that I said MINIMUM.”
They also told me that they “Don’t make compromises in their house.” Which closes the door on potential healthy conversations.
A close friend and I (one of my besties, I can’t believe this lined up!) are able to move in together next week.
And I am fucking TERRIFIED of having the conversation with my current roommate.
This feels like the final trauma housing insecurity boss because I have to stand up for myself alone. I’m NOT alone, I have a v solid group of friends who love and care for me.
But, the conversation itself will be alone.
And as I mentioned, they CONSTANTLY make sure that I’m aware of our age gap and that “they know more.”
I am fucking TERRIFIED. Because of how they’ve been treating me.
What the fuck do I do? How do I have this conversation in a kind, yet firm way?
PS: this person works a corporate job and will not be financially set back by me moving out! They will literally be fine and are not in a position of facing housing insecurity
