My issue with the use of advanced stats by the NBA talking heads…
This is my being a nerd, but whenever I listen to people like Zach Lowe, I do have an issue with the way they present their stats and how they use them to determine how “good” or “bad” a team or player is
Specifically, a team’s rankings or percentage regarding a specific advanced stats
A team having the 5th best offensive ranking, for example. What does that mean? Usually raw numbers are more representative, but saying a team is better because it’s ranked 5th vs 10th doesn’t mean anything if the separation between 5 and 10 is negligible. How does the gap between 5 and 10 compare to 10 and 15?
Or a player having the 8th best true shooting percentage vs the 25th for example. I assume the difference between 8th and 25th is supposed to seem large, but is it? Or is it separated by 0.03 percentage points?
Anyway I’m just ranting before the finals start
