28M in Ontario – Plumbing Career Path, G3, and Grade 12 Math
Hey everyone,
I’m 28 and making a career change into plumbing with no prior in-field trade experience. I recently completed a plumbing pre-apprenticeship program and am trying to figure out the smartest path forward.
One thing I’m debating is whether I should take Grade 12 math. I earned a 92% in my college-level trades math course, but I’ve heard some unions and employers still prefer or require Grade 12 math.
I’m also curious about whether pursuing a G3 Gas Technician licence would be worthwhile alongside plumbing.
A few questions:
If you were starting over at 28 today, would you still choose plumbing?
Is Grade 12 math worth taking if you’ve already earned a 92% in college trades math, or is it unnecessary?
For someone whose primary goal is plumbing, is getting a G3 (and potentially a G2 later) a worthwhile investment?
Would you prioritize getting into a union apprenticeship or focus on finding the best employer willing to sponsor you?
What advice would you give a new apprentice who eventually wants to own their own plumbing company?
I’d appreciate any feedback from plumbers, gas fitters, apprentices, or business owners in the trade. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.
