Is Coop still brutally painful?

Haven't tried it since season 1, where it was just "why would you do this to yourself?" mode. Curious if it got any better. Had a friend pick up the game, and sitting in disc chatting while playing is fun, but also fun to hop in together at times. I played a little campaign with them and seems like it's still "you get half the loot you'd normally get" so not bad as a 2nd time through with a friend on their 1st I guess?
