What is my absolute best use of my "working" hours?
Background. I quit my job in 2010 and the stock market went up even though I didn't really pick the greatest stocks and I mostly had index funds. This portfolio allows me to not have to be employed for a salary. What should I do ? What is the very best use of my time?
Here are my options ...
-
write an app that I have had in mind for a few weeks now. It has potential to make money but realistically we know it's unlikely but it would be interesting. It would be fun and entrepreneurial. Some of this project would be compatible with vibe coding so that would make it novel for me.

just look at some Reddit threads about stock picking and analyze some stocks. I have plenty of both academic and professional experience in this area. There are always more growth or value stories to learn about and financial reports to read.

apply for a software / firmware job that I found when I was looking at somebody's idea of a "hot" stock pick. There are almost never these types of postings in Canada. There are not many firmware postings these days and if you see one it means the company has the common sense not to turn everything over to 20 year old vibe coders. I have plenty of both academic and professional experience in software development. The company is in an area that has defense applications and I've always wanted to do something in defense. This firmware job would be in another province and my wife would have to have a say in whether we can move to that part of Canada. She works part-time and she could probably get a part-time job wherever we end up. I know for certain that I would be a top quartile performer in the position if I were hired but since teams are small and we cannot run experiments 1000 times because the life of a hiring company and the life of each person involved in supervising me is a life that is lived only once, it would be hard to prove that I am top quartile. The task of landing a job is boring and I'm not charismatic and I actually never go into an interview seeking to impress in a positive way. I always go in with a let the chips fall where they may approach because it's your problem if you don't hire me. I feel that if I try to impress you in a positive way, that's kind of unfair to you. The most fair thing is 1000 experiments that prove I'm top quartile.

Not for the first time, I spent several months writing a program to trade intraday. The first program was an ETF trader with a lot of parameters. This one is simpler and it trades stocks. It seems to lag the market but I might be able to make some improvements. I currently run it to collect more data because I don't trust data I did not personally collect and in a few weeks I'll probably do some data mining runs to see if I can beat the market. While I'm collecting data I can make some improvements but frankly a new project like the entrepreneurial app I already mentioned might be a good change of focus.
Obviously I'm leaning to option 1 but comments are welcome.
