Obgyn Receptionists
Im not sure if it’s just me or if I’m extra sensitive or not, but has anyone else wondered why receptionists or appointment coordinators are so monotone and lack empathy?
I’ve been dealing with recurring BV / yeast since September 2025. Symptoms of irritation / itching arrived last Wednesday and I went to get tested that following Friday. All my test results came back negative, which is actually insanely frustrating for me. I contacted the office to get a revisit to see what other testing is available and how I can get help. My experience booking the first appointment for initial testing was actually great and I was so grateful they could get me in so quick
The woman I spoke with to schedule a revisit just honestly seemed like she didn’t care if she was helping me at all, and this hasn’t been my first experience. Across the board for different obgyn practices this has been a common theme. I explain my situation and discomfort and I’m immediately met with a flat tone of “date of birth.” “First and last name.” “Phone number.” There’s no “I’m sorry to hear that” or any indication that this person doesn’t completely hate their job. It’s already uncomfortable enough having to speak to a stranger on the phone and tell them about my vaginal issues.
I could be projecting my own insecurities, but it just made me feel kind of like I was stupid for calling in or that my discomfort wasn’t important. After putting me on hold twice, I asked to speak to a nurse after she told me I couldn’t be seen until 5 days from now, and she kept interrupting me when I was trying to speak. I would go to urgent care, but they have a history of misdiagnosing me and not sending results to labs (using microscope for swabs on-site instead). I completely understand that obgyn’s are incredibly busy and I do believe that an appointment in 5 days time is the best they could do, but usually speaking with a nurse directly helps get an earlier appointment.
I still proceeded to sincerely thank her for her help considering I felt completely bothersome for needing her assistance, and I wanted to make sure to extend gratitude. She says “have a good day” and hangs up immediately.
Maybe someone can give me an alternative POV, or if this is just how employees are trained to handle their phone calls? I’m not sure if I’m being dramatic or not due to the fact that I’m just so incredibly uncomfortable with the irritation I’m having and my period is also approaching in a few days. Thanks all :-)
