Malaysian Man Arrested in Japan for Allegedly Scamming Woman Out of $260,000 in Gold Bars While Posing as a Police Officer
A Malaysian national has been arrested in Japan for allegedly impersonating a police officer and defrauding a 63-year-old woman of gold bars worth approximately ¥38 million (about $260,000).
According to police, 42-year-old Chan Teck Ee, who is unemployed and has no fixed address, allegedly called the woman in Ama City, Aichi Prefecture, in February 2026 while pretending to be a police officer and other officials.
He reportedly told the victim that her bank account had been used in criminal activities and that an investigation was necessary to determine whether she was involved. The woman was then persuaded to hand over 1.4 kilograms of gold bullion worth around ¥38 million.
The case came to light after a financial institution alerted authorities.
During questioning, Chan denied the allegations, stating, “I do not remember.”
