Why some people still consider periods as taboo and abnormal??!!!

:ask: Ask Teens

Yesterday, I got my period while I was at school. I did what every normal girl would do: I took out an extra pad wrapped in a plastic bag from my school bag and asked my teacher if I could go to the washroom.

She said, "No, you may not. There was a lunch break before this period, and you should have gone then."

By that point, I already had a blood stain on my frock, so it was pretty obvious to my benchmate and a few students around me that I was on my period. So I loudly said, "Ma'am, it's an emergency. I just got my period."

She stared me dead in the eyes as if I had asked for her liver while she was drinking alcohol.

The whole class was silent at first, but then some so-called backbencher boys started laughing as if I were some kind of joke.

I repeated myself because the teacher seemed too stunned to speak. Then she finally said, "You may go."

By then, it was pretty clear that the thing in my hand was a pad. One boy shouted from the back that I had a pad in my hand, and then they all started laughing again. It didn't make me feel bad because they were the ones who were less educated and less mannered in that situation, but it did make me uncomfortable for the rest of the day.

My friends backed me up by confronting the boys after the bell rang and the next teacher came into the classroom.

It also left me with a lasting impression of how some boys and middle-aged people still consider periods a taboo subject and how backward their thinking can be.
