Switching instruments

I am moving to a new highschool. Pretty large band, about 100 people. I played flute before but I’m a dude and dont want to be in such a female dominated section. I want to switch instruments. My mom messaged the band director that I would be joining a couple days ago and he said I could play flute. I changed my mind and don’t know if he will say yes. I can buy my own instrument and already know how to play several I can choose from. Band camp starts in a month and a half. How cooked am I
