Did You Notice the Red Flags or Choose to Ignore Them?
Most of us have a gut feeling when something isn't right. The problem is that we often choose to ignore it because we love the person, we're attached to them, or we don't want to face the truth. We keep giving them the benefit of the doubt, hoping they'll learn, grow, and change.
Then one day, after years have passed, you realize that some people never change—not because they can't, but because they aren't interested in changing. They want a companion, but not necessarily you. They could be okay with anyone filling that role.
I was in a relationship where I ignored countless red flags because I was in love. When I finally ended things, part of me thought he would fight for us or make an effort to fix what was broken. Instead, he gave excuses and couldn't even do the bare minimum.
The signs I ignored that eventually became deal-breakers
• He always said, I'll improve, but kept repeating the same mistakes.
• He claimed he was bad at expressing love, yet had no problem pointing out my mistakes when I stopped expressing mine.
• He constantly chose situations, convenience, or practicality over me, and I kept making excuses for him.
• He ignored my emotional needs and my way of feeling loved because he believed his way of loving was the only way that mattered.
• He used being avoidant or nonchalant as an excuse for not making an effort.
• He turned me into a teacher instead of a partner. Constantly explaining, reminding, and guiding someone on how to treat you is exhausting.
I ignored all of these things because I believed love would be enough.
Years later, he is still repeating the same patterns.
The hardest lesson I learned is this: when someone consistently shows you who they are, believe them the first time.
