Resolution Mismatch Between Laptop Screen and Second Monitor

My laptop (1600p) and my second monitor (1080p) resolution mismatch is causing me a boatload of issues. Many applications randomly go black and stay black until I alt-tab into settings to switch back to the laptop screen. Is it possible to use different resolutions like I am now, or should I find a 1600p monitor? Thanks in advance for any and all advice
