Do I want to join for the wrong reasons?
18 y/o male, 5'11, I used to be more physically active. Able to do 60+ clean push-ups, 3+ minute planks, about 12 clean pull ups, but was mostly into lifting weights. I can put on alot of mass really quickly, both muscle and fat. I got fat (200 lbs) and lazy when I fell into the wrong group, I betrayed my own values for a girl. After leaving all that behind because of a dream I had, I died and had nothing to show for it, I stayed comfortable, complacent, and didnt have any meaningful life experiences because of how sorry I started to become I am sure I want to join the military, likely the marines. Im getting back into shape, eating less than 1000 cals daily, and doing a shit ton of running and body weight exercises, rapidly improving. The last year I have felt like a failure, doing as little as I could, feeling like shit no matter my career move, being a fat slob, until this new sense of purpose. I have wanted to go into law enforcement for years now. However the path getting there can go alot of ways. Full disclosure, because basically any military experience will help alot in law enforcement im not looking at benefits past pride, the title, and the training. If I wanted benefits I would go Air Force. The whole point in me joining to to become a man and giving myself a reason to proud of myself when im taking my last breath someday. I want a four to six year contract, either a basic rifleman or a machine gunner atm. Everyone is saying thats a bad idea. Endless joint pain, health problems, and alot of janitorial work when there isnt anything going on. I may just be ignorant but I really dont care that it would suck the great suck, I dont want to end up another soft member of my generation, I have no social media minus this. Screen time is under 2 hours a day adding in calls. I have never taken any drugs, alcoholic beverages, or even tried any form of smoking or vaping. I have never been one for gaming, I love camping, bushcraft, being outside and surviving with as little as I can, I have always loved that stuff. Our scout master did two tours in Iraq and taught us kids a shit ton of survival skills then would throw us into the woods every other weekend with nothing but knowledge and a knife to see who did best. A big reason for joining is the knowledge and training in survival and combat because thats always interested me but I dont wanna be one of those tacticool guys with no military experience. That and to prove myself. I think of it similar to how alot of the kids parents an my school started out poor, with their needs barely met, but they worked and overcame that, now they have their needs met and want to make sure their children have everything they never had, a huge expensive truck at 16, free college, a comfortable, aided transition to adulthood, everything handed to them. Parked outside gas stations with their immature stupid smirks and daddys money. I didnt get any of that because my family has always believed you should earn what you have. If I did have that option I wouldn't take it anyway, same with the military, most all the men in my family served, they all want me to not go in because of what happened to them, I want to earn my way through life, not become another soft, spoiled, snob who takes the free road living off others hard work. My Dad was a combat engineer, he is supportive and proud of my decision to try and join. The rest of my family are actively trying to talk me out of this. Obviously im young and my perspective is gonna be wrong in alot of ways, I need the advice and thoughts of others who are not family or recruiters with agendas on this because if I do make a mistake it may affect the rest of my life. What MOS would you recommend joining? If I go Infantry should I go Marines or Army for the best results based on what I want? I would like to hear literally any advice or thoughts you have about any of this. I meet with a marine recruiter in his office in a few days after having several phone calls.
