Need advice: 2.989 LEP GPA for Aerospace Engineering at UMD

I'm a transfer student at UMD trying to get into Aerospace Engineering through the Clark School LEP process.

Long story short, I had a very rough start academically due to untreated ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I attended Penn State and PGCC before transferring and performed poorly during that period. Over the past year, I've been diagnosed, received treatment, and significantly improved academically.

Recently, Penn State approved retroactive withdrawals and late drops for the semesters affected by those circumstances, which substantially improved my GPA. I've shown an upward academic trajectory over the past few semesters since then. I also just finished a strong semester at UMD with a 3.861 GPA.

After all of the transcript updates were processed, I was informed that my LEP review GPA is now 2.989.

The Clark School requires a 3.0 GPA, and UMD truncates GPA calculations rather than rounding, so my review GPA remains 2.989 even though it's only 0.011 below the requirement.

I have already reached out to advisors and am planning to submit my application before the deadline, but I'm trying to understand whether anyone has experience with:

  • LEP appeals that were just below the GPA requirement
  • How much weight is given to strong academic improvement
  • Whether documented medical circumstances and approved retroactive withdrawals are considered in the appeal process
  • Any advice on how to approach this situation

I'm not looking for false hope. I just want honest insight from anyone who has been through the LEP process or seen similar cases.

Thanks in advance.
