Care

My husband and I used to have a pet rabbit named Mazie. She died a few years ago and we are planning on getting rabbits again.

When we adopted Mazie, it was a spur of the moment thing, we moved a few times and everything we did was rather improvised, but we did the best we could for her.

Now, we have our own home, stable incomes, energy and the time to plan and do it with more purpose.

We already plan to have an entire bedroom for two bunaroos, and we spent our date night talking about what we want to do for them, but one piece we are unsure on is flooring.

The room we plan to dedicate for them is carpetted at the moment. In the past, we had squishy lock-together gym mat type flooring (EVA flooring?) that worked pretty well, but since this is our own place we could also rip out the carpet, put down some linoleum or snap together "hardwood" and have rugs for them.

What have you done with your buns and what have been the pros and cons?

Here's our lists for "thought of" pros and cons

Carpet:

Pros: Already installed (no extra cost), soft surface for good hopping, easy to lie on with them, neutral looks that goes with the house and leads into main house for eventual supervised roaming

Cons: difficult to repair or clean if they get diggy, or potty training doesn't go as well as we're hoping, weird, possibly toxic, cushion under if they get diggy

Mats:

Pros: Familiarity with using them, relatively inexpensive to purchase, easy to replace one piece if it gets damaged, stands up decently well to digging, still got good grip for hippity hopping

Cons: lots of edges to nibble at and again, possibly toxic, harder to fit into odd shapes/corners, not super attractive to look at, I personally always got sweaty spots while laying on it

Hardwood and rugs:

Pros: Easy to clean hardwood and rugs, or replace rugs that are too damaged, gives options for flooring/lounging texture for the fur balls, very good resistance to digging/scratching, fun eclectic/bohemian visual vibe

Cons: probably the most expensive and work intensive option, rugs shift and move while buns run, massive texture change to the rest of the house and concerns about behavioral training (ie: scratching ok on hardwood but not the rest of the house)
