Mourning a friendship while sharing a room: My best friend turned roommate is freezing me out, and the loneliness is crushing.
I really need some advice on how to emotionally detach from a situation that is breaking my heart every day.
My roommate and I used to be incredibly close friends. We did everything together—we shared all our secrets, talked for hours about random topics, and spent our evenings watching movies and shows together. Our room was our safe space.
A while ago, the energy shifted, and she started acting distant and negative. I finally calmly asked her why she was behaving like this. Instead of a real conversation, she immediately flipped the script, played the victim, and accused me of hurting her. When I tried to tell her that I was suffering from her behavior too, she completely dismissed my feelings, shut down, and said, "There’s no benefit in telling you anything anyway."
Since that day, we haven't spoken a word. We sleep in the same room in complete, heavy silence.
To make it worse, she has started inviting our mutual friends from our hostel building into the room. When they are here, she puts on this loud, overly warm performance with them while completely freezing me out. It feels like a deliberate attempt to isolate me and make me feel like an outsider in my own space.
Because they are mutual friends, I can't just put on headphones without looking like the one who is being moody or antisocial. So I just sit there, trying to look perfectly unbothered, while my heart is breaking on the inside.
I feel incredibly lonely. I don't have another close circle I can just call up to vent to. There are other friends in my building, but I am actively choosing not to share this situation with them. I don't want to portray her badly, play the victim, or ruin the harmony of our friend group. But keeping this entirely to myself means I am carrying a massive emotional burden alone.
I’m usually good at managing my emotions, but living with the ghost of a dead friendship in a tiny room is tearing me apart.
How do I stop missing the version of her that used to be my best friend?
How do I cope with the intense loneliness of sitting in a room full of mutual friends who have no idea I am hurting?
What are some psychological shifts to help me completely detach, accept the silence, and reclaim my peace of mind.
