How do you deal with interviewers asking personal questions?
Hello! I'm a college student who still has two years left of school, and I've been applying to internships. I'm currently majoring in Biology, and most of my applications are related to STEM as a field. I didn't expect interviewers to ask about personal information, and that's left me a little unsettled. (If this sub isn't the right place to ask advice for more college-related stuff, I'll take it down!)
To be more precise, I've gotten questions about my personal life, like what I do in my free time, what kind of commute I have, and the one I'm most concerned about, which is my dating life. In both interviews that asked me that, the question was phrased as "boyfriend or girlfriend", which I suspect is also unsubtly asking about my sexual orientation. For context, I'm androgynous and have a gender-neutral name; in other words there are very few straight women who present themselves like me. The area where I live is progressive enough that it hasn't become enough of an issue, but I'd rather not have me being queer on the records of any company in this climate.
TBH I could be hypervigilant and the company is LGBTQ+ friendly, but I'd rather not leave it up to chance, and there's definitely going to be personal questions in the same vein once I graduate and get a full time job, such as whether I plan to start a family. I might consider deliberately lying by omission, or dressing more feminine, if it comes to that. How do you deal with personal questions that could be used against you later?
