2nd time retrieval/ Spoiler

Spoiler: After I have received the Basement Key and opened the foundation basement door and drained the fountain, do I have to:

in a single run, get the basement key again from the antechamber AND backtrack to the fountain to open its basement door? That seems like a lot of steps…
