Got rejected for a job role and I am absolutely inconsolable

TW: Anxiety / Depression

I recently gave a job interview for a role that aligned with my internship experiences. For context I am fresh law grad in a jurisdiction where the job market is bad. My profile had everything that the JD stated, and the profile fit was almost 98 percent. Cut to the interview: I finished my interview feeling very good about how answered and performed because I got constant good feedback throughout the interview- The global GC said they found my profile very impressive and appreciated my answers too telling me how well I would do in this role. The results came a day or too after that and suprise suprise suprise, they passed me over for someone who not only was a weaker candidate, but also did not have relevant internships. For context, this was a role in m&a and project finance, but the interviewer started out in tax before pivoting to m&a. In my mind, the reason they chose the other weaker candidate is because they too had only tax internships. I know I sound salty but if they wanted someone with tax experience with a clearly non-tax profile, they shouldn't have bothered interviewing other people who clearly had a better practice area fit, and I know people will say but tax ain't that different from m&a and tax is very much a part of cross border transactions. In that case, the fit was even better for me because I also did m&a tax as part of my electives. I had everything on my profile- from good GPA, relevant experience, relevant coursework, not to mention I did well in the interview and got appreciated by them too.

Just wanted to rant how unfair the hiring system is but then everything in the world is. I guess I am just trying to rationalize my loss at this point because it has affected my morale like no other loss has. I have been a high achieving student and seeing people who have coasted by in law school get jobs just like that, while I have to potentially compromise and look for roles that I wouldn't enjoy doing and that won't pay well. Not to mention that hiring has closed in most places, so I don't even know if I can get employed atp. There is another thing that gnaws at me like nothing else. I am 26 year old, a woman and don't come from money. This role would have liberated with me financially at least. Suddenly, law school does not seem like a good decision- in my years at law school I have faced so much BS and unfairness, I don't think I have it in me to keep going. I don't even know how to get myself employed because jobs in my jurisdiction run completely on contacts. I have done everything, EVERYTHING at this point but nothing seems to work. I have anxiety attacks at night thinking I might end up jobless- and I am petrified by that thought because I have been through that cycle once before I decided to do law school from one of the best universities in my country. I have been set back by a decade from a financial pov and the less said about time cost the better. I wish someone just gave me a chance to prove myself. I am a classic, walking example of you can do everything right and yet fail.
