Every Best of the Super Junior 33 Entrant Ranked:
Thought I'd post on here for the first time to share a ranking I collated. I've been doing this personally with G1s and BOSJs past but thought I'd share them below! I expect my opinions will be varied to most others so I would be interested to hear others opinions.
20: KUSHIDA - I imagine this will be the most surprising and controversial placement but man was KUSHIDAs run hella disappointing for me this year. Putting up a mere 6 points and having a litany of unremarkable or bad matches and a weird foot focus gimmick this wasn't what I personally wanted out of a run from the Time Splitter. This is mainly this low as this was the most disappointing run though probably not the worse in ring.
19: Jakob Austin Young - An underwhelming debut in my eyes. The overreliance on interference (in a block with two HOT guys and Daisuke Sasaki mind) made alot of JAY'S matches unenjoyable and I would be hard pressed to pick any of them out as good. He is merely above KUSHIDA as this was his first BOSJ and thus didnt have the expectations of a veteran like KUSHIDA.
18: SHO - Normally SHO lingers at the bottom of these rankings but I enjoyed his early antics far more than I had anticipated. Whilst I am turning around on the murder machine, his antics couldn't hide the formulatic nature of his matches and a general dip in quality compared to other matches. Better than expected but not incredible.
17: Daisuke Sasaki - Pretty much here for the Desperado match alone. Sasaki has a fun character and presence but when the bell rang I always felt let down. This could also be a complete lack of ball knowledge as I have watched DDT far less then New Japan but I knew enough to expect a bit better.
16: Yoshinobu Kanemaru - This is the Heelmasters ideal spot. A reliable talent who can get a good amount of pressure on upper talents. Kanemaru will fall into the same basket as the other prominent veteran in this tournament as a guy stuck in short matches to even the points without the quality being hampered. Pleasantly surprised.
15: Ryusuke Taguchi - First A Blocker and Taguchi is hampered by a massive lack of runtime. I believe he had the shortest total in ring time of all the opponents (I could be wrong) but managed to be fun in brief spurts. The mid part bet and Funky Harbour are heavily carrying Big Match Tagooch up the ranks.
14: Valiente Jr. - You can tell this man is a bit green around the gills but Valientes tournament had a big turn around after the Fujita match. His matches were never great but I wouldnt say any were awful, maybe just the wato match... A better debutant than JAY and hopefully in a return he will not be hampered by a knee injury.
13: Hyo - Another debutant who is bogged down by a weaker B Block leading to a lack of standout matches. Hyo was a ton of fun throughout the tournament but he lays low here due to match quality not being the best. The best way I can describe Hyo is he made 5/10 matches a 6/10 through character and crowd work. I hope he can return into a more stacked block next year.
12: Taiji Ishimori - The ranking after Hyo was difficult. I love the Bone Soldier but this was a pretty standard performance from Ishimori. Nothing really incredible but a consistently good performer even if his score is not reflective of his threat to the tournament. Maybe one day he'll get that coveted BOSJ trophy but the division needs to be far healthier for that.
11: Robbie X - It was very painful to place X this low after a much better BOSJ run but he is competing with a STACKED A Block which leaves him this low which should be more indicative of A Blocks high quality. X remained great throughout with fun matches and becoming super over but the company clearly never positioned him to be a threat after dropping major losses early. Love Robbie X but he was very much just a guy in A Block.
10: YOH - Good performance from YOH but definitely the weakest of the 4 semi-finalists. Had great matches with all the expected folks and never had a bad one but for the love of god change his theme back. YOH seems to be an eternal bridesmaid and I suspect he will not be making it past Master Wato. One day YOH, one day.
9: Daiki Nagai - This may seem low but remember the majority of his matches are short 5 minute openers. That being said Nagai has four bangers against Robbie X, Master Wato, Francesco Akira and especially Kosei Fujita. Definitely the best Young Lion tournament performance and Nagai will be a star. Great stuff.
8: Nick Wayne - Better than last year by far. Stagnating his wins was a much better idea and him getting the main event against Wato on the last night was a real vote of confidence. Wayne was a joy to watch but again not a fan with any chance of making the finals. This was a great showcase for the young man.
7: El Desperado - Taiji Ishimori but with better matches. Desperado was enjoyable as he always is, him and one other put in some hard work to make the B Block somewhat entertaining and he stayed a threat throughout. Gave several men their best match too. A good block showing from Desperado and one of the two main highlights of B Block.
6: Francesco Akira - Really thought Akira would be more important this year. Losing to Wato and Fujita early was the writing on the wall for Akira who was then completely without a chance. He was definitely the best primary heel in the tournament as he didnt need to rely on interference and always had really good matches. That first night match with Fujita set out to set off the tournament strong even if the quality of the matches were not respective of complete quality of booking.
5: Titan - Consistently good though some short matches stop him from reaching the top of the top. His opening streak gave a block a fun threat and his matches with akira and fujita were memorable. Enjoyable, strongly booked and consistent, what more could you want.
4: Robbie Eagles - Easily B Blocks MVP for me. Never had a bad match and kept a great consistency which B Block sorely lacked. Eagles was the glue that kept B Block nights from being unwatchable and I am just so happy he's finally topped out a block. The B in B Block stands for Bob. Bob of the Super Juniors forever.
3: Master Wato - No man has had such a disparity in a year between BOSJ runs like Master Wato. From a completely unremarkable run last year to being one of the two primary factors of the A Block. The match with Fujita was match of the tournament and Wato had some great matches with Nick Wayne, Jun Kasai, Akira and Titan. Theres also been a style change with Wato as he appears to be adopting a more hard hitting style (he should keep that lariat it looked incredible). Wato is slowly regaining himself after the mindnumbingly stupid attempted assassination at the anniversary and is probably the most likely winner. If he did win, he's deserved it after a good month of improvement.
2: Jun Kasai - The man adapted like a duck to water. This shouldn't have worked, at all, not in a block. But it did. Not a single bad match and whilst the work rate may not have been out of this world the enjoyment rate was. I loved every moment Kasai was on screen and just for the insane adaptation to a hybrid style he deserves to he up this high. Loved this stupid stupid man and I need to see him again in a BOSJ.
1: Kosei Fujita - Fujita must have been curated in a lab to be the perfect Junior wrestler. The fact he wasnt crowned last year was absurd and even more so now that he has shown he is the best Junior in the company. Every match was good, most were great and he pulled one of, if not the best YL matches. Previously mentioned to have had match of the tournament with Wato and he is a semi-finalist. If you wanted to show someone the example of a near perfect BOSJ run, Fujitas run this year would be the example. If he does lose out to winning back to back then he should be your champion either by or crowned at Wrestle Kingdom 21. Kosei Fujita is a Junior Wizard.
Overall, I really enjoyed this year's Best of the Super Junior tournament and I am aware we still have two more shows but if I included semis and finals then the top 4 wouldve been Eagles, YOH, Wato and Fujita. Whilst the quality was distributed evenly between blocks, A Block definitely aided in making this a far better Best of the Super Junior then I had expected.
