How do you break a Hawley retainer

Haven't worn my retainer in months since I got my braces off and the Hawley one hurts when I snap it in place, I put the plastic one on it fit nicely actually however when I woke up in the morning it felt like my teeth were gonna fall off took ten minutes for the pain to go away

How can I break my Hawley retainer in a convincing way so that I don't have to tell my dad I neglected it
