Why do some first dates feel emotionally cold from the first minute?

I went on a first date recently that left me genuinely confused, and I’m wondering if other people have experienced this.

The date itself wasn’t “bad” on paper. She showed up, talked, answered questions, and we spent about an hour together getting coffee and walking in the park.

But from literally the first moment we met, the energy felt extremely cold and emotionally closed off.

  • No real greeting besides a quick wave. We met outside the coffee shop, and she literally just went directly inside without even looking at me, or even paused for a sec.
  • no eye contact or warmth,
  • and throughout the date it felt like I was carrying almost all of the conversational momentum.

She could hold a conversation fine, but she almost never asked me anything back or seemed curious about me as a person. What confuses me is: if someone already feels that uninterested from the first 5 minutes, why go on the date at all?

I’m not asking this in a bitter way. I genuinely want to understand how other people approach first dates. Personally, if I agree to meet someone, I try to show up with at least some openness/warmth even if I’m still figuring out attraction.

Is this just normal app dating behavior now? Are some people just very guarded on first dates? Or is this usually a sign they already know early on they’re not interested romantically?

For context, I’ve also been on dates where the conversation itself was awkward or the compatibility wasn’t great, but I could still feel mutual interest/warmth. This felt different. more like someone politely participating rather than emotionally engaging.
