Lifetime chemical exposure load

Looking at how to advise my son. He's 16, starting helping around a taxidermy shop at 11 - doing full mounts now. He's found that he is quite good at fish, especially the airbrushing. For those that paint a lot or work with chemical exposure, how do you encourage others - and yourself - to wear some sort of protective equipment (gloves, masks, etc)? I'm concerned with him starting so young, he will risk health problems earlier as well. Thanks!
