Ruling on the Prayer Behind an Imam Who Holds Polytheistic Beliefs in the Awliyā and Righteous — Shaykh Sālih al Fawzān

Question:
Is it permissible to pray behind an Imām who believes in the Awliyā and righteous? Please advise us on this matter. May Allah bless you.

Answer:
Believing that the awliyā and righteous can benefit or harm, cure the sick, or relieve hardships—as is believed today by the grave-worshippers among the people of shrines, this is major shirk, and we seek refuge in Allah. The one who holds such a belief has left the religion, because he is worshipping other than Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
For no one possesses the power to harm or benefit, relieve hardships, or fulfill needs that none can fulfill except Allah. None possesses that except Allah, Glorified and Most High.
And believing about the dead and those in the graves or even about the living that they are capable of doing what none can do except Allah, such as curing the sick, bringing provision, or averting harm, is major shirk. This is because it involves attaching oneself to other than Allah, relying upon other than Allah, and directing one of the greatest forms of worship to other than Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
Therefore, if this Imām is as you described, then he is not from the people of Islām so long as he remains upon this belief, and his leadership in prayer is not valid, because he is a mushrik with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
