When characters seem unlike unshakable pillars and face death without fear but end up being human.

10th Doctor (Dr Who): He willingly sacrificed himself as the Doctor does but in his final moments, the Doctor shows vulnerability that is truly heartbreaking ~ "I don't want to go."

Erwin Smith (Attack on Titan): The dude just wanted to know what was in that basement so bad, to know why titans exist and what lies beyond the walls. But to win, he has to give up his dream. He willingly chooses to sacrifice himself but deep down he doesn't want to.

Rosette Christopher (Chrono Crusade Anime): Rosette breaks her seal so Chrono can defeat Aion. Sitting on the porch, Rosette seemed to have come to terms with her death but suddenly breaks down, crying and telling Chrono she doesn't want to die and there was so much more to do.

Nicolas D Wolfwood (Trigun Anime): Nicolas, after being shot, confesses at a church altar. He seemed at peace and happy with how things turned out. He talks about being reincarnated in a place where he can live happily. But then he realizes that he has everything he has right here already. As he dies, he rages that he doesn't want to go, and doesn't want to die this way.

Carla Yeager (Attack on Titan): After being trapped by debris and telling Hannes to go with Erin and Mikasa, she tells them that she loves them. She puts on a brave face, despite knowing a titan is coming. We think she dies with a smile knowing her children are safe when a few moments (or panels) later, she pleads for someone to come save her.
