in games controls, there is technically only space for "3 abilities" \*including\* the ultimate. But how? most characters have 3 abilities on top of the ultimate! Well its simple really, not a single character(almost) who has 3 abilities, has a secondary fire mode! Coz the third ability takes the place of a secondary fire. You can go character by character and barring the few exceptions mentions later in this post, every single character who has 2 abilities has a secondary fire, or a character with 3 abilities has no secondary fire

there are certain exceptions which ill talk about here but its very curious how they are limiting themselves and do not budge to include a 4th ability button, i really appreciate that, makes kits less overwhelming

now to the exceptions:

1)mercy, she is a weird case where the new ability came from a perk, but mercy already has alternative fire. What they did? THEY USED RELOAD coz mercy cannot reload!

2)baptiste has alternative fire. They used crouch!

3)lifeweaver has alt fire, and originally didnt have that ability. They made his dash be the jump button. Also hanzo, even though he has no alt fire

4)characters like ramattra with nemesis, vendetta with her shield, brigitte with her shield, all 3 make u change forms to be able to use an ability using the same buttons already taken! Block on ram is alt fire same way shield is, and his primary fire just changes, no alt fire for nemesis punches needed. Same way for vendetta projectile she needs to hold her shield coz she already has 3 buttons excluding the ult.

5)hammond is the worst exception in a way but even he doesnt add another button in the menu, he uses the 3 buttons, crouch(like baptiste) and also uses the jump for retract(u can remake it into a few of other options but cant fully rebind it!)

additionally, venture, junkrat, bastion and tracer are the only ones not to follow this trend, only having 2 abilities and no alt fire option. Most of them are old characters, but i wonder why venture was added with so little to them

I really appreciate overwatch for making the character buttons so simple, Hammond is the highest button character in the game, needing a whole 7, compared to normal 5(including firing the weapon and ultimate). They make such deep kits without making them overly complicated, at max you need to do 2 inputs to get an ability out(like brig dash)and even that is rarely the case, as is shown in this post. This is one of the main reasons i love overwatch and wanted to point it out to others

appreciation post to overwatch's kit design team, they get really creative to not overcomplicate character kits
