App thoughts?
Hi all. Getting ready to apply. Wanted to know what you guys think. Are there any glaring weak areas I might want to address? I have about a year+ until I apply.
Also functionally impossible to tell without an MCAT score, but I’ve done about average on practice exam sections a year or two ago without dedicated study but that doesn’t mean much
22 M white gay (happy pride)— 3.91 cGPA + 3.93 sGPA
Nursing major switched to biochem and minor in psych sophomore year, got accepted into nursing school but I felt like there was something more to medicine that I would miss out on as an RN. Also was mostly driven by the almost guaranteed income directly after undergrad, but my brain developed. Yay
Significant family issues + functionally zero SES
Worked as a fitness instructor for a year in HS; not sure if that counts.
2500+ hrs as a home health CNA
~2000 hrs unpaid research (ongoing) - (2 pubs soon, 1 first author review), 2 presentations. 1 independent project that I conceptualized and executed.
50 hrs shadowing (ongoing) multiple specialties (family med, ophthal, EM)
Will have great letters of recommendation from CNA job, lab, and committee at UG.
Major hobbies: Bodybuilding, oil painting (all 4+ years) cannot fathom the hours.
Dark side is… I have zero “leadership” or “volunteering”, even though I’m technically doing volunteer work in the lab. I honestly was never interested in joining clubs in undergrad(?? Seemed disingenuous), let alone take on a leadership role at one 😀
I’m also thinking about volunteering for a local LGBT+ organization, possibly to help promote awareness/accessibility for sexual health etc. I personally know some people involved.
Anyway I feel like maybe I’m missing something? I’m honestly deeply fulfilled with where I’m at, but I’m worried that with no ‘volunteering’ or leadership will stand out a bit. I do not want to check boxes either.
Thanks 🙏
