Rewiring old internal Laptop webcams to have a plug and play USB-C/A camera

I have a lot of them lying around and could really use them. I followed many tutorials online (it's been some time, can't tell for sure/give you a link), they all were similar. But I never managed one to actually work.

Has anyone ever done stuff like that and was successful - and remembers what the exact process/tutorial was?

And will plug and play be possible from e.g. a smartphone? Or will I need obscure drivers only available for who knows , win 98?
