How to fix Global Geo-IP Routing Issues: The "Preferred Matchmaking Server Lock" Proposal

Make a Game Suggestion

Hey everyone,

Many players worldwide suffer from massive in-game lag (+200ms) not because their internet is bad, but because of faulty Geo-IP routing issues from local ISPs. In several developing regions (like parts of Africa, Latin America, or the Middle East), internet providers route gaming traffic through distant international hubs (like Europe) before sending it to the closest local game server.

Even though MLBB perfectly detects our true physical location for Street Leaderboards, the automatic matchmaking algorithm gets fooled by the ISP routing and throws us into foreign servers with unplayable red ping.

To solve this worldwide issue without breaking the game's balance, here is a refined proposal for a Preferred Matchmaking Server Lock in Profile Settings:

1. Preventing Server-Hopping Abuse:
By limiting this lock to one change per season, casual abusers wouldn't risk locking their main account to a high-lag foreign server for 3 whole months just to try and get 'easier matches'. It completely traps abusers while saving legitimate local players.

2. Preventing Accidental Locks (Misclicks via VPN):
To stop players from accidentally locking themselves into a wrong region while using a VPN, the system should:

  • Only display the regional server assigned to their verified physical GPS location (which MLBB already reads perfectly).
  • Run a mandatory 5-second connection ping test before confirming. If the ping is red, the lock is denied.
  • Alternatively, grant a 3-match trial period to undo the lock if the connection feels unstable.

3. Stopping "Lobby Abusing" (Mixed Region Parties):
To prevent exploitation in mixed lobbies, the matchmaking algorithm will always prioritize the Lobby Host's Server Lock or apply a majority-rule. If you join a foreign friend's lobby, you accept playing on their route. No hidden bypass possible.

4. Preventing High-Elo "Deadlocks" (Infinite Queues):
Remember, this is a "Preferred" Lock, not a hard wall. If the matchmaking queue exceeds a critical threshold (e.g., 5 minutes in ultra-high Elo), a pop-up will ask: "No match found on your preferred server. Expand search to secondary regions?" The player remains in control.

Why this actually benefits Moonton (Dev & Business Perspective):

  • Saves Server Bandwidth: Forcing players into their closest local servers stops cross-continental traffic from clogging up foreign server pools with high-latency packets.
  • Lightweight Implementation: This doesn't rewrite the matchmaking code; it just adds a simple "IF" condition based on existing regional APIs.
  • Player Retention: Fixing this keeps the growing global player base active and spending on skins instead of quitting out of frustration.

Let's push this so the developers see a universal, bulletproof solution for all misplaced players worldwide!
