Material science at IITK

I am leaned towards tech and I am choosing material science at IITK .

Please answer few of my questions-

1)Will I have enough time to explore non core opportunities

2)How tough is it to maintain a 8 or 8+ cgpa

3)How are internships , like how many of the total get internships.
