How to "fix" the stiff throttle pedal in the Air
Had my Air for about a week and the stiff throttle pedal was really bugging me so decided to dig into it. Found an easy fix that takes about twenty minutes, costs zero dollars and is reversible. The guts of the throttle pedal has two springs. You just pop one out and for me that was problem solved. I also find it much easier to modulate the throttle now.
Here's the procedure-
-
Move the seat all the way back as you're going to be climbing around under the dash.
-
Kill the car. If you unplug the pedal with the car live it will give a drivetrain error and the car won't move without a hard reset. To completely shut off the car do not have your phone on you if using PAK. Get in the car, close door, lock the car with the key fob. The car will shut off. Wait ~10 seconds until you hear the main contactor disconnect. Open the door, car is now dead. Move the key fob far enough away that car can't detect it or it might come back on again.
-
Remove the plastic panel above the pedals. There is one T25 screw above the throttle pedal to remove. Then pull down on the panel to unsnap it. Pushing the brake pedal down will allow you to snake the panel out. Disconnect the light connector and put the panel to the side.
-
Unbolt the pedal. There is one obvious screw down bottom the other is dead center on top. These are 10mm. I used a long 1/4" drive extension with a universal joint to get at it. With the pedal unbolted unplug it.
There's a little plate behind it you need to make sure goes back in
- Unscrew the two T25 screws on the pedal
- Unclip the three clips holding the pedal cover on. A razor blade on each one(3 blades total) worked well for me.
- Now pop out the lower spring with a flat screwdriver. It's under very little tension so it's not going flying. If the white washer comes out it's keyed and goes back in as shown in the picture with the key at 9 oclock.
Now reassembly is the reverse. Tada!
