Animals don’t deserve to live in their natural habitats; most are better off in good zoos.

Animals/Nature

People romanticize nature as if it’s some peaceful paradise. It isn’t. Nature is constant hunger, disease, parasites, injury, territorial violence, and dying young. A zebra in the wild doesn’t get freedom; it gets a daily chance to be eaten alive.

Meanwhile, a well-run zoo provides food, veterinary care, protection from predators, treatment for injuries, and often a longer lifespan. Humans themselves abandoned “natural habitats” when we built houses, hospitals, and supermarkets. We don’t tell people they should return to caves because it’s more natural.

The argument that animals “belong” in the wild assumes that freedom is automatically worth more than safety and comfort. For many animals, that tradeoff is questionable. If an animal can live longer, healthier, and with less suffering in a zoo, why should its natural habitat be considered morally superior?
