I hate where I live and its literally killing me
My parents died, and I took over their house (my childhood home). They lived in a very boring Midwestern illinois suburb. I hated the place so much growing up that I joined the military to escape it. For the last 20 years, I've lived overseas and all across the United States and have seen the most amazing things you could dream of.
At the time of their death, I lived on the west coast in a cramped apartment with my husband and dog after leaving the military. I was paying 3k a month, and I didn't even have a yard for my dog, so the idea of moving into their huge home mortgage free with a gigantic yard was all I saw. I picked up my husband, and we moved back to this place. I thought I could make it work. My brother promised us both management positions in his restaurant...that never happened and came to find out he's a scamming piece of shit who pays everyone under the table.
We can't find meaningful employment out here. The culture shock of coming from a busy city out west to ....this... has been unbelievably hard. The people all seem either very standoffish, aggressive, or just downright mentally incapacitated. We've tried making friends, but theres no where to go to make friends other than the local chili's or dive bar. No thanks.
It's gotten so unbearable that we've started drinking heavily to numb the boredom. I wake up and see strip malls and amazon factories. Im trying to get the house in order so that I can sell it, but when you're heavily depressed, it's not the easiest and i get so overwhelmed with it all i just procrastinate. I can't rent out the place and just leave because we need the house payout to be able to afford a new house back west. I've traveled the entire world, and now im back in the same damn place I grew up in that i desperately tried to leave 20 yrs ago. What was I thinking?!?!
I feel completely and utterly stuck and guilty for even putting this on my husband . He's struggling so badly. We both are. I dont know if anyone has advice or not, but if you do, it's appreciated.
