The New What If....? Is Pretty Messed Up

SpoilerComic Discussion

My first more minor complaint is that I didn't love the all exposition all the time format. It's essentially a picture book that just sort of tells you what happened. No scenes, no real dialogue just "and then this happened" with lots of references to regular continuity events. Which I guess is somewhat necessary if you want to cover as much ground as this issue does. But it sort of rolls into my bigger complaint.

When I finished the issue I thought "aw, that's kinda sweet. Scott blew up the world to be a good dad". But then the implication on the regular continuity sunk in. Basically the conclusion of the issue is "if Scott hadn't bailed on his wife and baby to get back together with Jean the world would be completely destroyed and uninhabitable". Which directly entails "well thank God Scott left his family!".

Scott bailing in his family is a strange part of his history that was clearly somewhat motivated by things outside the comic. It's arguably out of character for him but ultimately I think it's more interesting and I'm glad it's there. It makes Scott a more complex and more realistic character.

Which makes the whole thing kinda qualified by this issue kinda annoying. Especially because it's just exposition. There isn't a story that justifies it or an exploration of how we get there. It's just Duggan basically saying "just so you know, if he didn't leave his baby there'd be no X-Men or earth anyway".

Even weirder he just throws Jean off planet so she doesn't die with everyone else?

All very weird.
