Discrediting individuals because they didn't win the Champions League

A frustrating trend I see recently when judging footballers, that removes all context from their careers, some notable examples:

Buffon: This always comes up in debates with Neuer. In 2002/03, he was so good he won the equivalent of player of the Champions League MVP of the time. He made several key saves in the 2003 final and kept a clean sheet against a top AC Milan attack for 120 minutes, two penalty saves in the shootout, a stunning save against Seedorf in particular. His team can't score and they miss 3 out of 5 penalties.

In the semi-final, he saves Figo's penalty, which is a big reason why they are in the final. In 2015, he is outstanding against Real Madrid in the semi-final again, knocking them out as they lose in the final. He played great in the Champions League, but a goalkeeper can only do so much.

Ronaldo: To understand Ronaldo's career, you have to understand football in the 1990s. There was not the same gap between the Cup Winners Cup, Uefa Cup and the Champions League as is seen today. Imagine a player winning Fifa World Player of the Year and Ballon d'Or while not even playing in the Champions League but that's what happened 1996-98.

Ronaldo was outstanding as he led Barcelona and Inter to back-to-back European trophies. Ronaldo finally gets a chance in 1998/99 when he is 23 for Inter, but he gets injured at the wrong time, and is not fully fit for the matches against Manchester United as they are eliminated. He then doesn't play again for 4 whole seasons. In 2002/03, he plays great in the Champions League. He goes to Old Trafford against a strong United side, fully fit this time, and scores a hat-trick to be applauded off by the home fans. He scores in the first leg of the semi-final against Juventus (against the great Buffon mentioned above), but he has a calf injury so can't start the second leg as they lose. 2003/04 he is beginning to show signs of decline, he has an okay season but they lose in the quarter-finals. So from when he emerges in 1995 until 2004, he plays three CL campaigns, it's barely anything, of which one was pretty unlucky. For context, his namesake Cristiano played 18 campaigns.

Mbappé: He maybe has less excuses than the others, but his CL performances have somehow been underrated recently as he's become a meme and people just point to 'PSG win, no Mbappé = Mbappé was the reason they didn't win'. Completely ignores contexts like him scoring both legs against Real Madrid in 2021/22 and being the best player on the pitch, to give his side a 2-0 leg on aggregate with 45 minutes to go only for Donnarumma and others make horrendous defensive mistakes to collapse 3-2 on aggregate.

He has scored a hat-trick against Barcelona at Camp Nou, a hat-trick against Manchester City. His first campaign for Monaco, he has scored lots of important goals. He has 70 goals in 98 games. If his team wins the CL next season, it doesn't mean that he is suddenly a great CL performer and if they lose the final he is a failure in the Champions League but people seem to judge it off these team margins for individual performance.
