Missing Money

I'm playing The Oregon Trail on my Xbox, and I was doing well financially and stopped to camp and mine for gold . Upon leaving the next day, I lost $728 from my total. Why did this randomly happen? I can't find anything anywhere that explains why that money would just disappear. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
