Historically, is high tempo, "heavy metal" football really the "identity" of Liverpool?
Throughout the Slot saga of last season, there were lots of talk that Slot had robbed the heavy metal football out of the club. It was said that Slot had "killed" the identity of Liverpool FC.
Being younger, I've only started supporting Liverpool since the 2010/11 season. Generally, I certainly don't think we played high tempo football throughout the "banter era": under Roy Hodgson, Sir Kenny Daglish, and Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers perhaps had one season of successfully implementing high tempo attacking football when we came 2nd in 2013/14, but I'm not sure whether that was just one freak season (we had Suarez on steroid) or something Rodgers had been building since he took the job in 2012/13. In 2014/15 and the beginning 2015/16, we returned to clueless banter football again before Rodgers left ane Klopp took charge.
For those who have watched Liverpool for longer, did we always play heavy metal football under Rafa Benitez or Gerard Houllier? I believe Benitez has a more conservative, calculated style. It would be interesting to see if he fit the high pressing, heavy metal style we're used to under Klopp. If you have watched Liverpool even earlier, way back in the 20th century, I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.
The spirit of Liverpool FC has always been that of passion and intensity, but has the football always reflected that spirit? Has heavy metal football always been Liverpool's style of play, or a recently established phenomenon under Klopp?
