Could gandalf pulled himself up?

In the fellowship of the ring >! In the mines of moira could gandalf just pulled himself up on the bridge? While its dope he messed up the demon. It seem like the demon wasnt hurting much in abandoned mines other than scaring the goblins. And it would have been to everyones benefit for him to stay with the group. !<

Reading the books and watching the movies. Havent quite finished the book but i just couldnt wait. Loving it so much! Havent seen them since i was little and forgot all the finer points of the plot.
