Despite Jax's treatment towards Ribbit being crucial to the story, the finale didn't make it clear why Jax acted that way towards her. Rather, Jax's story seemed convoluted, and the sources of his trauma disconnected.

We are given 3 major sources of trauma for Jax:

\* He had an abusive mother.

\* He was confused about his gender identity.

\* He ruined his friendship with Ribbit after opening up to her.

Allow me to piece it together:

Jax's mother would show him love, then abuse him, then love him again. That was the only twisted form of affection that Jax knew.

After opening up to Ribbit, Jax realized that Ribbit knew his secret. This triggered in Jax a defense mechanism, and he expected Ribbit to use his secret against him just like his mother.

Jax avoided Ribbit at all cost. He was afraid of her. He started resenting her. He accused her of deceiving him so she could use his secret against him. He became paranoid. He told Kaufmo to not believe anything Ribbit said about him.

After Ribbit locked herself in her room, Jax started to realize his mistake. However, he was still reluctant in reaching out to her, as his mother also had the habit of playing the victim. Then it was too late.

The irony is that Jax inadvertently repeated the same cycle of love and abuse from his mother, using the affection that Ribbit had for him against her. After that, Jax had completely given up on getting affection from anyone.

Understanding why Jax treated Ribbit like that
