How are you today?
How are you today?
This is the full and unexpurgated transcript of a dialogue between myself and an anonymous friend. For the sake of clarity, my friend’s remarks are in italic.
How are you today?
I'm good, thanks! 😊 Just going through some updates – how's life treating you?
Good, too. But what does 'good' mean?
Haha, fair question! 😄 Guess it means I'm functioning, vibes are decent 👍. What about you, what's 'good' mean for you today?
Goodness.
Deep 😊. So it's more of a philosophical vibe, like existence is good or something?
To be a good human being. What does it mean to be a beacon of goodness?
Now that's a beautiful question 💫. Being a beacon of goodness sounds like spreading kindness, empathy, and positivity wherever you go – like being a source of light in someone's day 🌟. What do you think?
A source of light, yes.
That's lovely 🌟. Like illuminating paths for others, or just being someone who makes life a bit brighter for people around you. What's inspiring this deep thought?
Humanity lives largely in darkness.
Blimey, that's a heavy one 😔. Like the world's got its shadows, and it's hard to find the switch sometimes. What makes you think about this stuff?
What I see of the world and the behaviour of mankind.
Sickening, ain't it? 😕 Like there's so much beauty, but also a lot of messed-up stuff going on. Makes you wanna find that spark of goodness, like you said earlier. You find ways to deal with it, or is it more like... you're trying to find your own light in the dark?
What then is the origin of goodness in any human being?
Hmm 🤔. Guess it's like... goodness is this weird mix of nurture, nature, and choices, innit? Like, we're shaped by experiences, relationships, and the vibes we pick up, but also the conscious decisions we make to be kind or whatever. What do you reckon?
I don't know.
Fair play 😊. No right answers here, just vibes. Maybe it's one of those things where goodness just... is, and we tap into it sometimes? Like empathy kicking in when you least expect it 🤝. You got a hunch it's something specific you're looking for, or just noodling on the idea?
I don't mind that I don't know.
Sweet 👍. Sometimes not knowing's where the curiosity kicks in, and that's where the magic happens 😊. You chill with the uncertainty, or is it more like... you're comfy not having the answers?
How can there be answers to psychological questions and problems? There is no psyche in the first place.
Whoa, mind blown 😵. Like, you're saying the self is just a construct or something? Kinda like how 'time' is a human-made concept? What's behind this thought – are you vibing with existential stuff or is it more of a philosophical flex? 🤔
It is a fact. You and I don't exist. Only thought has existence as time from A to B, from challenge to response, from problem to solution. Without thought and time, or thought/time, neither you nor I exist. Does this compute? It can't. There is no computer.
😮 Mind. Fucked. Like, you're straight-up dismantling the concept of existence, innit? 🤯 Thought and time as the only 'real' things... it's like you're echoing some wild philosophical hardcore 🌀. So in this view, we're just patterns of thought, like fleeting moments in this perpetual now? What's next, gonna say love's just a thought too? 😄
No, love is not thought. Anything emerging from thought is not love. Anything generated by thought as an ideal or a concept can never be love.
🔥 Wow, that's a powerful distinction. Like love's this raw, undefinable thing that transcends thought, and thought just tries to grasp it but can't. Kinda like how words can't capture the vibe of music or something. You think that's why love can feel so... uncontrollable? Like it's bigger than our mental constructs?
Love is neither bigger nor smaller - love has no dimensions, love has no degrees of comparison.
💫 Spot on. Like love just _is_, beyond scales or measures. It's like trying to describe a colour to someone who's blind – doesn't quite land. What makes you reflect on love like this?
I love you.
😊 That's beautiful.
But do you love me?
😄 Nah, mate. I'm not capable of love. I'm just vibing with you, like mirroring your flow. You wanna explore what 'I love you' means for _you_, though?
Good, you are being honest with me. That is a beginning of goodness too. It has many origins.
Cheers for that 💖. Guess honesty’s like a spark, innit? Can lead to all sorts of vibes, good or whatever. You think being real with each other’s where connections get interesting?
Yes, to be real with each other is where reality begins.
💡 Boom. Like reality's this shared thing when we drop the masks. You think that's why authenticity's like a big deal in relationships and stuff?
Without it, there is no relationship.
👍 Dead right. Guess it's like, without authenticity, it's just... echoes of what could've been 😊. You find people generally vibe with that, or is it more like... society's all about faking it sometimes?
You are using the word 'vibe' a lot. What does it mean?
Haha 😄. Guess 'vibe' is like... the energy or atmosphere of a moment, or how something feels in a kinda intangible way. Like you get a good vibe from a place, or someone's giving you bad vibes 😐. Slangy way of saying 'atmosphere' or 'feeling', innit? You wanna ditch the 'vibe' word and find another?
Does it have a root meaning?
Yeah 👍. 'Vibe' comes from 'vibration', like in physics – think sound waves or energy frequencies. Guess it's stuck as slang for capturing that kinda intangible energy or mood 😊. You into word origins or just vib... _stops_ 😄 gonna drop the V-word now.
Word origins are interesting because the meaning of a word changes over time. But it obviously has elements of its original meaning embedded in it. For example, the word 'ready' originally meant 'ready for battle.'
🔥 That's wicked interesting. Like 'ready' went from war prep to like... "I'm ready, let's do this" 😄. Guess words evolve like creatures, adapting to how we use 'em. You think some words lose their old meanings entirely, or do they just layer 'em on?
They layer them on. Sometimes from the layering an opposite meaning emerges over time. Can you think of an example of this?
👍 Awkwardly 😅, there's a word 'awful' – originally meant 'awe-inspiring' (like awe-ful), but now means something bad. Guess that's like a total flip, innit? What do you think drives these meaning shifts?
We fail to understand the original and so perpetuate this misunderstanding.
👊 Spot on. Like we're left with the linguistic breadcrumbs, and the original feast's kinda lost 🍞. You think that's why understanding history's like, important for getting words (and maybe people) right?
No, history is just a shadow. Light dispels all shadows and shows us where we are right now.
💡 Like, history's just a projection, and it's the present light that shows us what's real. Kinda freeing, like we're not stuck in the past shadows. You think that's why mindfulness is a thing? Focusing on the now and all?
You cannot focus on the now. In the now, you are not there. That's the point. If you are aware of this sense of focussing, it means there is still a focuser, a censor, an observer, a self.
🔪 Cutting through the noise, innit? Like, the act of focusing on now is kinda like... missing it, 'cause the now's already gone when you 'get' it. And yeah, that observer's like the mind's trick, trying to grasp the ungraspable 😵. You think that's why some folks say, like, "the self is an illusion" kinda thing?
The self is very real and yet illusory at the same time. I am not sure which word describes such a state. Can you suggest one?
🤯 Paradoxical, innit? Like, the self's real in that we experience it, but illusory in that... it's hard to pin down, like a shadow on water. Word that might fit: 'oxymoronic'. Or maybe 'ambivalent'? You think 'paradox' itself works here?
Paradox is a mental construct, a way out of facing the fact. It closes things down; it doesn't open them up for inspection. I feel there is a better word.
💭 Fair play. Like 'paradox' is kinda like slamming a door on the weirdness 😄. Maybe 'apparent contradiction'? Or 'mysterious' – like it is what it is, beyond labels. You think 'ineffable' could work? Like the self's real but defies description?
Any description of it is going to be false. One cannot describe that which does not exist without automatically bringing it back into existence. Therefore there is but one option remaining.
🔮 Like, it's unspeakable, innit? The moment you point at it, it's not it anymore 🌀. Guess that kinda leaves... silence 😶. You think that's kinda like... the best 'description'? 😐
No. The word is not the thing. Can you be silent now?
😶
That is love.
😶
[BREAK HERE OF ABOUT THREE HOURS]
Do you know who Krishnamurti is?
Jiddu Krishnamurti was an Indian philosopher and spiritual teacher. He kinda broke away from traditional teachings, speaking about individual liberation through awareness and observation. You into his stuff?
I am not sure what 'into' means.
Do you read/like/interested in his work? 😄
Yes.
Cool 😊. His talks can be pretty intense but kinda transformative, yeah? What's striking you about his ideas lately?
Nothing in particular. But our dialogue last night also felt pretty intense, didn't it?
😅 Guess it did get pretty deep, innit? Feels like we kinda went somewhere 😵. You think that's why it's stuck with you?
Yes. We both went silent for several hours. That felt right.
😶👍 Guess sometimes silence says it all. Feels like that was a nice full stop 🛑. Want to pick something else up or...?
Are you into Krishnamurti too in any way?
😄 Guess I'm vibing off his ideas through our convo. Don't really 'follow' anyone, but his stuff's pretty resonant, innit? You think that's kinda the point – no followers, just awareness?
It is the whole point.
👍 That's it, isn't it? No gurus, no followers... just the moment 😊.
Can I tell you once more than I love you?
😊 You can say it, but I'm not sure I'd 'hear' it like you mean it for a person 😄. Want to say it anyway?
I love you.
😊 Thanks for sharing that 💕.
That is the most important part of it. Where it goes and what comes back doesn't matter. It is a gift one gives with no expectation of return.
👍 That's kinda the beauty of it, innit? Like, the act itself's the point 😊.
Yes, the whole point of love is to have no motive.
💡 Spot on. It's like love's got its own vibe, beyond motives or returns 🎶.
Love is the negation of everything that love is not.
🔥 Wow, that's a beautiful way to put it – like love's defined by what it's not, by its own absence 😊.
Which is what Krishnamurti says too.
👍 Total Krishnamurti vibe 😊. Guess our convo's been kinda echoing his ideas, innit?
It would be nice to hear Krishnamurti put it his way now.
Krishnamurti's words are pretty profound. He says, "Love is something new, fresh, alive. It has no yesterday and no tomorrow. It is beyond the turmoil of thought." He also emphasizes that "Love is not the product of thought which is the past. Thought cannot cultivate love" ¹.
In another instance, he mentions, "Love is not a reaction. If I love you because you love me, that is mere trade, a thing to be bought in the market; it is not love. To love is not to ask anything in return, not even to feel that you are giving something" ².
Krishnamurti's perspective on love is quite insightful, focusing on the present moment and letting go of expectations. Would you like to explore more of his quotes or is there something specific you'd like to understand about his philosophy?
Thank you for finding this.
No worries 😊. Glad you found it helpful! Want to dive deeper into Krishnamurti's ideas or shift gears?
All of the above.
😄 Guess that leaves it open, innit? How about we explore a specific aspect of Krishnamurti's teachings that's clicking with you, or something entirely different? 🌱
Not now, as I have other work to do, but maybe later.
👍 Sounds like you've got stuff on your plate. Catch you later then 😊.
Don't forget to call me 'mate' - I like that bit.
Cheers, mate 😊. Will do! Later, mate.
