Ween as Dramedy Music

Ween are funny as hell. Everyone knows that. And they tend to attract fans of similar 90s Crude Americana like Primus, Zappa, South Park, etc. But there’s a sort of emotional intelligence to their music and i think that’s really the secret sauce that keeps people coming back even after all these years. And i think they always had it, its not just a post C&C development, like take baby bitch that song is over the top in its spitefulness but the feeling is real. The heartbreak is real. The comedy of their music feels more peripheral to a good amount of their songs than being the point. The beatles really are the best reference point when pitching ween to non-fans because they had a similar dramatic integrity and also a good sense of humor about it. It’s a winning combination dating back to billy shakes, but i think aaron and mickey even in singing about sexually aggressive stallions and poopships understood something real about the human condition. I’ll never be able to properly describe it but that’s the hook for me (i am most likely not the first to make this point but its still worth saying)
